Boann

Associated with the River Boyne.

Name(s): Boann, Boand. Her name is believed to mean “white cow.”

Family: Sister of Be Binn

Spouse: Nechtan

Children: Aengus mac Og (with the Dagda)

Affiliations: Tuatha de Danann

Locations: Boann’s best known location is, of course, the Boyne River.

Tales: Boann’s affair with the Dagda is facilitated by the Dagda sending her husband Nechtan on an errand, then stopping the sun so that one day lasts nine months (long enough for Aengus to be conceived and born).

Boann accidentally created the Boyne River from Nechtan’s well; in either version of this tale she loses her life in the deluge.

Other details: Her name survives in the name of the River Boyne.
