According to Snorri in Gylfaginning, Mani and Sunna were originally the human children of Mundilfari, and so lovely that he named them after the moon and sun; this so outraged the gods that the children were taken into the sky to serve them.

Tales: In Vafþrúðnismál it is said that Mani and Sunna must both traverse the heavens every day so that humanity can count the years.

In Grimnismal it is said that Mani and Sunna are pursued by wolves during their travels; Mani is chased by Hati Hróðvitnisson while Sunna (Sol) is followed by Sköll.

In Gylfaginning Snorri states that during Ragnarok Mani and/or Sunna will be devoured by the wolf Managarm.
