Nanna

Associated with love and devotion.

Name(s): The origin of Nanna’s name is uncertain; I’ve seen it suggested as related to words for “woman” or “mother” but haven’t seen any clear evidence.

Older scholars sometimes suggested that Nanna is related somehow to Inanna, but this theory seems to have been disregarded over time.

Parents: Nanna is the daughter of Nepr; her mother is not specified. In Gylfaginning she is referred to as Nanna Nepsdóttir.

Spouse: Baldr

Children: Forseti.

Affiliations: Nanna is one of the Aesir.

Tales: Nanna is primarily known from her role in Baldr’s death. When, at his funeral, he is placed on his boat Hringhorni, she dies from her grief. The gods place her next to him on the boat and set it alight, and she accompanies him to the halls of Hel.

Other details: When Hermod comes to the halls of Hel to negotiate a release for Baldr, Nanna gives him gifts for Frigga and Fulla to bring back to Asgard.
