Njord

Associated with the sea, abundance, and commerce.

Name(s): The name Njord is believed to be cognate with that of Nerthus.

Parents: Unknown

Spouses: Nerthus; Skadhi.

Children: Freyja and Frey (with his sister/wife Nerthus)

Affiliations: Njord is one of the Vanir.

Tales: After the Aesir-Vanir war, Njord and his children Frey and Freyja (along with Kvasir) travel to Asgard as hostages; in return, the Aesir gods Mimir and Hoenir are sent to Vanaheim.

In Skaldskaparmal, it is told how after the Aesir killed the jotun Þjazi, his daughter Skadhi came to them for reparation for his death. She was allowed to choose for herself a husband from among the gods but had to choose from looking at his feet. She hoped to choose Baldr, and chose the cleanest and most beautiful feet, but it turned out that those belonged to Njord.

According to Gylfaginning, after Njord and Skadhi were married, each wanted to live in their own home—Njord by the sea,to Skadhi in the mountains—and for a while they tried to live together, taking in turns which place they would reside. Unfortunately this did not work out, as neither could bear the other’s home, and they separated.

Hall: According to Gylfaginning, Njord resides in Noatun.

Other details: In Vafþrúðnismál Njord is said to have had many temples and altars dedicated to him.

In Gylfaginning Njord is said to have control over the winds, surely a boon for a sea god.

In Skirnismal Skadhi is said to be the mother of Frey, although other sources suggest that Frey was born in Vanaheim, long before Njord and his children traveled to Asgard (and before Njord and Skadhi would have met).
