Skadhi

Associated with the wilderness and mountains, hunting, skiing and winter, self-respect.

Name(s): The origin of Skadhi’s name is uncertain and under debate, but it’s worth noting that the word skaði is Old Norse/Old Icelandic for “scathe, harm, damage,” which would bear some relation to several of her stories.

Parents: Skadhi’s father is the jotun Thiazi..

Spouses: Thor.

Children: There is some debate as to whether Frey and Freyja are the children of Njord with Skadhi, and sources differ on whether this could be possible, but there seems to be more lore evidence that indicates that their mother was Njord’s sister among the Vanir.

According to Ynglinga saga, after Njord and Skadhi ended their marriage, she and Odin had many children. However, since this appears in the ancestry of Norwegion jarls, it may be in the same category as Odin’s ancestry of the Anglo-Saxon kings—to establish the authority to rule.

Affiliations: Although Skadhi is the child of jotuns, she resides with the Aesir and is counted amont them.

Tales: In Skaldskaparmal, it is told how after the Aesir killed the jotun Þjazi, his daughter Skadhi came to them for reparation for his death. She was allowed to choose for herself a husband from among the gods but had to choose from looking at his feet. She hoped to choose Baldr, and chose the cleanest and most beautiful feet, but it turned out that those belonged to Njord.

According to Gylfaginning, after Njord and Skadhi were married, each wanted to live in their own home—Njord by the sea,to Skadhi in the mountains—and for a while they tried to live together, taking in turns which place they would reside. Unfortunately this did not work out, as neither could bear the other’s home, and they separated.

When the Lokasenna tells of the binding of Loki, it is Skadhi who hangs a serpent over his head so that the venom drips onto his face.

In the Ynglinga saga it is said that after she and Njord separated, she and Odin came together and had many children.

Hall: Skadhi inherited Thiazi’s mountain hall, Thrymheim.

Other details: Skadhi is known for her love of skiing, snowshoeing, and hunting with a bow.
