Sopdet

Sopdet is an Egyptian goddess associated with the star Sirius, believed to be connected with the inundation of the Nile and the beginning of the new year. She is also a fertility goddess, appropriate for her link with the Nile flood.

Sopdet is depicted here with a five-pointed star upon her head. She may also be shown with that same star on top of the white crown of Upper Egypt (the headdress worn by Satis). In later years she could be depicted in the form of a dog, due to Sirius’ Greek connection with the dog.

Bright-shining Sopdet, lady of the night sky,
lady of the faithful flood, I praise and honor you.
